Tu as une Belle Famille offers multiple perspectives on alternative reproductive technologies which are gaining popularity among 25-35-year-old women who can afford it. The installation frames three versions of the same photograph inside of ice trays, objects that can refer to egg freezing reproductive technologies. The frontal view shows a woman with four children, the left view shows the same woman with one child and the right view shows the woman alone. The original photograph was taken subconsciously by the 29-year-old childless artist in admiration of the young woman, likely the mother of the children. After taking the photograph, the artist complimented the woman on her family, “Tu as une belle famille”. The three different versions of this family represent the false sense of security that egg freezing technologies provide in their attempt to control nature, reproduction, and the achievement of an idolized family. No matter how much money is paid for this technology, nature cannot be completely controlled; eggs might not survive the thaw, many eggs will not be viable, freezers can be unplugged. The ice trays represent the standardization and industrialization of reproductive technologies, while also evoking a moment “frozen in time” to thaw and plan to bring to life at a later time.

Often visual identity is captured in photographs, viewed one at a time, or one photograph is chosen to represent our identity, such as with an ID card. With our facial expressions and features ever-changing, how can visual identity be more accurately portrayed? Temporal Self is an experiment inspired by composite portraiture to attempt to find new ways of visual representation and engagement with portraiture. The woman featured in this series, Kelsey, is a genetic counselor by profession and an expert on what defines our biological identity, DNA. This piece questions the relationship between our internal identity (genotype) and external identity (phenotype).
